Nationwide Shipping of Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Front Blurb A good pint to grab at a Walmart price point–$4.98. But the swirl is sufficiently concentrated and flavorful that the thinness didn’t really interfere with my enjoyment. A little more blueberry swirl would have made this pint outstanding-you can see the swirl is thin from the pictures. I like a moister cake, so I had no real problem with it. The shortcake is softer, denser, more gummy than I was expecting-likely a compromise to prevent the shortcake from dissolving into the base and becoming too much like cake batter. Overall: Van Leeuwen’s Wild Blueberry Shortcake is a good pint featuring a nice, standard vanilla base, a pop of jam-like blueberry swirl, and plentiful moist shortcake chunks. I enjoyed the generous amount of chunks, about 10-12 chunks in my half of the pint. Most chunks were about 1/4 inch across, although there is some variety in the sizes, some larger, some smaller. Perhaps this is necessary for shortcake to survive inclusion in a pint of ice cream-a dry shortcake might quickly absorb the base and dissolve. They’re softer than shortcake, moister, more of an uncooked texture. I wouldn’t really describe them as shortcake. Shortcake Chunks: Soft, doughy, almost gummy, cake cubes. The swirl is so flavorful I often wanted more of it. But the concentrated blueberry flavor goes a long way-a bit of swirl flavors the whole spoon of ice cream. Happily, no ice is detected-a problem common when fruit is included in ice cream. Wild Blueberry Swirl: The swirl has the taste and texture of blueberry jam-sweet, with a burst of intense blueberry flavor. A good neutral start to build upon with the mix-ins. Vanilla Ice Cream: A nice Van Leeuwen base-creamy, dense, rich, gently sweet, with a mild vanilla flavor.
